The Farm house is no longer available for holiday letting.
Auchnafree is a beautiful 12,000 acre hill sheep farm rising
from 1,000ft to over 3,000ft (Ben Chonzie) at the top of Glen Almond.
Here the air is clear and unpolluted; the silence of the hills is
broken only by sheep, birds, running water and in the autumn by
the roar of stags.
The views are superb, and there are safe walks to suit all ages,
with hill roads and tracks for pedestrians only.
Auchnafree is Gaelic for the field of flowers; there
are many varieties to be seen, including some rarities on the 3,048
ft Ben Chonzie, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There are
many resident and migrant birds of the mountain, river and moorland;
Golden Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Grouse, Dippers, Curlews, Ptarmigran,
Oyster-Catchers and many others. The Red Deer often come down to
the river at dusk.
The whole area is fascinating historically, geologically and archaeologically;
ice-age marks on the hills, standing stones, a Neolithic burial
ground and a Stone Age settlement with an early example of a grain
drier. Expeditions within easy reach include: golf at nearby Crieff
or the famous courses at Gleneagles; historic Dunkeld, with its
cathedral; Killicrankie; Perth; the Sma Glen. Scone and Stirling
with their castles are both about an hour's drive away, Edinburgh
Castle is slightly further.
There are theatres at Pitlochry, Perth and Edinburgh. Edinburgh
also holds the Tattoo and Festival every year in August.
Glencoe, Glamis and the Cairngorms are all within a days
reach.
